The World Scholars Cup always provide a full programme at their global rounds – and this was no exception! On the first day, after settling in at our hotel, we went over to the old town of Baku, where we visited the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and learned about some of Azerbaijan’s history. The next day, students had the opportunity to further explore the old town, as part of the Scholar’s Scavenge. For this event, students were placed in cross-school teams to explore and get to know each other before the competition.
The next day, the World Scholars set up a day of sightseeing for us and we travelled to the outskirts of Baku to see the ‘fire mountain’ as well as the UNESCO World Heritage site of Gobustan. There, we saw petroglyphs dating from 40,000 years ago!
After this, the competition was in full force! We visited a local international school for a day of debate, writing and individual quizzing. Then, the next day, we were hosted by the award winning Heydar Aliyev Centre for the Scholar’s Bowl and the first talent show. Our Scholars (and Miss Forte!) are now all proud alpaca-parents!
On the final day, we had two closing ceremonies: the Juniors in the morning and the Seniors in the afternoon. Our students were recognised for their achievements in debate, writing, the Scholars Bowl and Challenge. A special congratulations goes to Tanush in Year 9 who received a trophy for his debate performance! At the end of the day, 5 out of our 7 teams had scored highly enough to qualify for the finals. This was a fantastic result, but more important was the way that our students represented the school. All students embodied the best of our school values and should be incredibly proud of their achievements. Well done scholars!
