Year 1 ended their Term 2 Science topic about plants and trees with a great couple of days at Umm Al Emarat Park this week.
On arrival at the park, we were welcomed by Mushrif the mascot and he prepared us for the day ahead with some dancing. The park rangers took us through the botanical gardens, and we were able to use our knowledge of plants and trees to identify different species.
We now know the name of the national tree of the UAE! Do you? If not, ask your child and I’m sure they can tell you. We learnt how some trees and plants prefer the shade to grow and we helped to build our own biomes whilst in the shade house.
We then went to the animal zone to see animals that live in the UAE, and we loved feeding some very greedy goats – they ate so much grass!
We know that deserts in the UAE are very hot and have little water. We were shown how to clean water that might be found in the wadis.
The children thought this was amazing and said ‘it was like magic’ when they saw clean clear water dripping into the bottle. It was a wonderful learning experience to be able to explore nature outside of school and put our term’s learning into a real-life experience.
