On the weekend of the 17th and 18th of May, a group of nine courageous BIS Abu Dhabi scholars travelled to Dubai with Mr. Grant and Mr. Mohamud to test themselves against the most talented young writers, debaters and thinkers in the UAE and the surrounding region.
Their participation at the World Scholar’s Cup was the culmination of eight months of diligent preparation and for two of the four groups the hard work paid off as they made it through to the Global Rounds, beating hundreds of other scholars in order to earn that right.
The World Scholar’s Cup is a global academic competition that encourages students to engage with a wide array of subjects. Students are given the themes long in advance so that they can prepare thoroughly and apply their knowledge to a diverse range of challenges at a regional and later global round. Although the young people at the tournament were in competition with each other, a positive attitude and good sportsmanship was encouraged and rewarded alongside academic talents.
Andre in 7B, who won an impressive 5 silver medals across the whole event, had this to say about his experience:
“At first glance, it seems unappealing, spending your weekend doing what might seem to be boring work, but it was in fact quite the opposite. When you sign up for the World Scholar’s Cup, you realize very quickly that there are a range of topics to study, all of which are very interesting. However, it was a nerve-wracking experience which was, in the end, worth it 100%.”
Fabah in 7A, who won two silver medals and along with Andre and Khadyja were ranked 35th for the team writing task out of hundreds of participating scholars, described her experience as:
“A lot of fun. From the moment we were given our timetables to the moment we received our medals we had a great time. Most importantly I am happy that the work we put in was for something and we qualified for the Global round!”
Well done to our students.
