NAIS Pudong Scholarships
El Dia De Los Muertos is originally a Mexican tradition that has now spread to much of Latin America. It normally takes place from the 31st of October to 2nd of November, depending on the country. It involves family and friends gathering to pay their respects and to remember people who have died. El Dia De Los Muertos, however, celebrates death using a different concept: it tries to take a more humorous tone as people remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.
There are many traditional activities connected with this very important day, which include honouring the deceased using “calaveras” (representations of skulls) and flowers, building home altars called ofrendas with the favourite foods and drinks of the departed, or visiting their graves with these items as gifts. The celebration is not solely focused on the dead, however, as it is also a celebration of life and appreciation for the people you love.
At NAIS Pudong, we decided to give a “taste of El Dia De Los Muertos” to our Year 6 students. We hope you enjoy the results!
