Our profile this week is Macarena, the twin of David who was featured last week. Below Macarena gives us an introduction to herself:
Hello! My name is Macarena Sanz Lozano. I am 12 years old and a student in year 7. I was born in Madrid, the capital of Spain but I have spent nearly all my life outside my home country.
When I was 4, I left Madrid and went to Liverpool for a year. Then I went to Canberra, in Australia for another year. After that I lived in Brisbane for three years. Finally, three years ago I came here. To Abu Dhabi! Having come here my life has changed completely. I just love it here in the UAE!
I have two siblings: a sister in year 11 and a twin brother. My family means everything to me. I don’t know what I would do without them.
During my time at BIS Abu Dhabi I have been part of many great experiences such as little stars, production, BSME, BSME Dance, Netball, Football, Swimming, Choir and lots of other activities including being house captain for Ash.
I really enjoyed being a part of BSME dance and being able to learn new dance styles I never knew there was. We also got to perform our dance based on ‘Sands of Time’ which I really enjoyed.
This year I was part of the U14 netball team. I was named captain for the team and encouraged my team to do better. In the end we came 2nd in the U14 netball league held at many different schools.
Being able to go to Dubai to compete in the U13 BSME games was amazing. I was even able to get a new personal best in high jump. Overall, we came 8th.
The lessons that inspire me the most are: Math, Science, Drama, Music and PE. These teachers here at BIS Abu Dhabi not only help us but they encourage us to do the best that we can do.
My passions are sports and acting. I love staying active and competing with my friends, but I also love acting and getting into my character’s shoes.
When I’m not doing these activities, I enjoy spending time with my family. In my spare time I also like to draw different people and things.
Macarena, Year 7
It’s something I’ve believed for a long time — that learning isn’t predetermined by our genes. It’s about growing, persevering, and learning through the process. I was really mindful of this idea at this week’s wonderful Primary Summer Concert, after which I found myself reflecting on whether these amazing children have an innate talent, or whether they have achieved so much because of hard work and practice.
I believe it’s the latter. These children, their parents, and their teachers all seem to share the belief that by trying and working hard, they will get better at what they do. This is what we call a growth mindset.
This week at BIS Abu Dhabi, we have had the joy of celebrating both ends of the school journey and it has been a beautiful reminder of how we support our students to dream big and grow into their future selves.
As exam season unfolds, there's a special kind of stillness that settles over the school. In the quiet hum of the examination hall, behind the rustle of papers and the soft clicking of keyboards, is a profound truth: we are witnessing a moment that our students will carry with them forever. It is the culmination of years of learning, growth, and perseverance, a chapter closing and a new one ready to be written.
